1 Step that Can Change Your Marriage for Good

When your marriage is not going well, it can be overwhelming and figuring out what 1 step you should take to change your marriage and get things back on track.

In these instances, its easy to just throw your hands up in desperation, or to become paralyzed by confusion and the feeling that it will literally take FOREVER for you to see any significant progress.

It will be tempting to just sit down and do nothing, while you continue to watch the situation slowly drift farther and farther off the course you had initially charted.

In these moments for myself, I’m reminded of a wonderful quote I came across at least 20 years ago. It’s one of those that struck such a chord with me, I’ve never forgotten it.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” ~Lao Tzo

Sometimes in life and marriage, we have an enormous amount of things we want to be different.

Years of bad habits and wrong choices that have lead us down a road where we’d like nothing more than to make an abrupt U-turn.

Issue in our communication.
Our connection.
Our mental well-being.
Our finances.
Our health.
Our connection with God.

When our motivation is low and our optimism for better days has long gone, I believe it’s because we fail to remember that every outcome we are experiencing started first with one. single. step.

One decision.
One action.
One thought.
One belief.
One word.

And that first step lead to a series of events and situations that have mounted up to what we now see before us.

Instead of intentionally taking one step in the opposite direction, and having a persistent patience for things to turn around, we want drastic and immediate whirlwinds to just take us back to those more ideal days.

It doesn’t work that way.

And lots of times we allow ourselves to become impatient and overwhelmed by the process that’s going to lead to a better version of ourselves so that we can have a better version of our life.

I believe the solution is to just start with one step.
Start with 1 thing that moves you in the right direction.

One conversation.
One compliment.
One change in perception.
One new ritual.
One quality that you commit to embodying.
One book you’ll start reading.
One prayer you’ll start praying.
One skill that you are dedicated to mastering.

This year I have goals in 10 different areas of my life.

Right now, I encourage you to figure out your 1 step.
